Community Mission and Objectives

Developing a mission statement that could incorporate social inclusion activities within a commercial framework proved an important starting point for the core group as it developed the strategic plan. In looking for a suitable model to guide the mission statement development, it was felt that the best approach to use would require the group to focus not alone on purpose and strategic concerns but also on the values and behaviour standards of the organisation as well.

Quilty Leon Project Mission Statement

"We believe that the primary responsibility of the Quilty Leon Project is to further the social inclusion interests of the community of Quilty and its surrounding townlands. As a community group, we must work together to develop a community that can participate fully in the ongoing developments of Irish life. We must also work towards ensuring that every member of our community feels that they have a role to play in the Quilty Leon Project and the development of their area. In all activities undertaken by the group, we will ensure that the best interests of the community are put first and that commercial activities will be customer oriented and ethically sound. We will work in cooperation with external stakeholders to provide opportunities for local people with respect to education, provision of services and employment. We will also work towards respecting and protecting our physical environment and natural resources."

This mission statement provides the ethos upon which the objectives of the Quilty Leon Project are based.

Objectives

The objectives of the Quilty Leon Project are as follows:

• To commemorate in 2007 the achievement and noble spirit of the fishermen who rescued the sailors from the Leon XIII sail ship in 1907.

• To create an annual Leon Regatta Festival that will run each September from 2007 onwards.

• To establish a Tidy Villages Group that will help to spearhead and manage initiatives to protect the local physical environment.

• To promote the cultural and historic heritage of the area to visitors through the development of a "community brand" named LEON.

• To establish a Comhaltas group in Quilty.

• To create opportunities for training and education for the people of Quilty and the West and North Clare areas on an ongoing basis.
